Workshop: Retirees Who’ve Always Wanted to Write

Finally decided it’s time to pen that masterpiece? Whether you’ve spent decades dreaming of a novel or just want to capture those family stories before they fade, this session is for you. We’re tackling the “tech terror”—yes, you can write without a PhD in computer science—and answering those nagging fears: Is it “too late” to start? Does my life need to be a thriller to be worth reading? We’ll look at inspiring debuts like The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, and The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman for proof that your best work is ahead of you.
Attendees will learn to:

  • Demystify the basic digital tools needed to draft and format your manuscript.
  • Convert your unique life experiences and wisdom into compelling narrative threads.
  • Navigate the initial steps of the publishing process without the usual industry panic.
  • Ignore the “prodigy” myth and embrace your late-blooming creative journey.
  • Establish a comfortable, guilt-free writing routine that fits your retirement lifestyle.

Where: Badger State Brewing Workshop Room, 990 Tony Canadeo Run Drive, Green Bay, Wisconsin
When: Friday, September 25 from 4 pm – 5:20 pm
Admission: FREE! (Space is limited)

What a Small Press Can and Cannot Do for an Author

With self-published work flooding the market, authors wonder if there is still value in working with traditional or hybrid publishers. This panel proposes to explain what an author can expect of a small or university press. It also takes into account what that publisher will expect of the author.

Panel Discussion: The Business of Writing Pt 2

The topic that was so big we had to split it into two parts! The first part is here.

Curious about what happens after you type “The End”? Demystify the publishing industry and learn how to navigate the business side of the literary world!
This panel will be moderated by screenwriter and strategic marketing guru Corinna Makris, this powerhouse panel brings together Kim Davis (publisher of Madville Publishing), acclaimed author Kathie Giorgio, and writer Karen Cutler Drecktrah for an insider’s look at the realities of getting published and building a sustainable writing career.
Whether you’re weighing traditional publishing against indie presses, trying to understand contracts and distribution, or looking to market your book like a pro, these seasoned industry insiders will share essential strategies, hard-earned wisdom, and practical advice. What you’ll walk away with:

Unbound, the Wild Goose Festival in Harmony, NC September 3-6

I attended the Wild Goose Festival in Harmony, North Carolina, with Madville author R.J. Lee. It was an amazing experience which finished with a BIG storm. (Last time I was in NC, Hurricane Helene came through just as I was leaving and chased me all the way home… I wonder if I should avoid North Carolina? But how could I? It’s so beautiful there…)

I was honored to have been selected to participate in this highly competitive writing workshop.

I’m got to study at the feet of some amazing authors. And I got to read from the very podium where Toni Morrison read. And I made some wonderful new author friends.
